"I have been going to Ruth Ann Holloway for acne scarring since April of 2017 and I highly recommend her to anyone looking to beautify his/her skin. Since the moment I walked into her office, Ruth Ann was very personable and genuine. On my first visit, Ruth Ann listened to my concerns and provided me with various treatment options. This page is to help clear the confusion of treatments called Microdermabrasion, when they are not.

Dermabrasion or "Open Dermabrasion" is a surgical application by a physician of a diamond frieze, utilizing a rotating instrument, to abrade to the papillary dermis, causing bleeding. This treatment is not performed much anymore, as it is expensive, requires local anesthetic, and may cause scarring.

Open Dermabrasion recovery: Skin is left with a controlled open wound. During healing the skin is pink and fragile. No sun is advised until the skin appears totally normal; this takes several weeks.

Crystal Microdermabrasion:  At Dermal Dimensions your skin is treated with either corundum crystals, or sodium bicarbonate crystals. The crystals strike against the skin at a high velocity, removing a tiny particle of skin, which the body replaces with healthier, firmer skin due to increased collagen and elastin in the dermis.

The skin is intensely exfoliatiated, polishing the skin's surface, and allowing other topical treatments to penetrate the skin.  The crystals are hygienically vacuumed away. When performed properly,  lymphatic drainage encourages detoxification. The skin is supplied with increased blood, oxygen, and nutrients. Other benefits listed below.

Fine lines, acne scarring, skin texture, and hyperpigmentation are visibly improved.  A series of treatments brings the best results.

Recovery: The skin looks slightly pink and may be tender for a few hours.

A few days post treatment the skin may show flaking as the new cells surface.  Sun Protection SPF 30 is advised.

Diamond-Abrasion: Sometimes mistakenly called "microdermabrasion". This treatment uses a diamond tip exfoliating wand with suction.  The wand is stoked across the skin to help remove dead surface skin cells. The result is a milder exfoliation. The skin may be slightly pink afterward, and will feel soft and smooth. At Dermal Dimensions this treatment is used for more sensitive skin, or for a treatment with no down time. It is not as effective for those with scarring.

Sandpaper:  I’ve had several individuals cause devastation to their skin using sandpaper. One woman had abraded her skin raw. When she came to see me she had a staff infection. I immediately sent her to the hospital ER. After her skin had healed,  we commenced in treating the scarring and hyperpigmentation that occurred.

Do not use sandpaper! Ever. (These examples were used with permission from the clients, and not intended to embarrass anyone.)

Home Microdermabrasion

Rotating Discs w/ Suction Devices - Many mini-home devices claim to be "microdermabrasion".  These devices have a sandpaper or disc that rotates against dry skin, and "abrades" the skin as it is massaged over the face. There is a risk of spreading bacteria with these devices. The discs should not be re-used. These devices cannot be immersed fully for full disinfection - sanitation. They are for superficial care.

Cream and Kits: Beauty cosmetic creams are now containing aluminum oxide corundum microcrystals. Some companies use the cream with small machines that rotate or vibrate the cream across the skin.  I call it skin-scouring. Extreme caution is needed!*

*WARNING: This abrasive cream can cause severe damage to your  eyes, expensive counter tops, acrylic tubs, cultured marble sinks, and wood or vinyl floors.  These creams should be kept away from children who may think it is a face wash or moisturizer.  When a child gets something in their eye, they keep rubbing. Home microdermabrasion cream can cause severe eye damage.

 Clinical-Microdermabrasion Results

From Richard Fleming, MD , co-director of the Beverly Hills Institute of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery ,

"One major benefit of Microdermabrasion is that it’’s safe for every skin type, whereas lasers and peels are not. The demand is explosive: acne, acne scars and pitting, fine lines,... stretch marks,... ; positive documentation exists for all."

James M. Spencer, M.D., Cosmetic Surgery Times Special Report.

"We found that deeper in the dermis, there's vasodilation and edema. Some time after a series of clinical-crystal microdermabrasion, we're seeing an effect deep in the skin. This effect is not created by just "abrasion!"  The effect of skin improvement is a result of the suction on the skin bringing nutrients from the blood to the skin for renewed vitality.  When clinical microdermabrasion is performed correctly, the suction on the hand piece encourages lymphatic drainage, detoxifying the skin of unwanted toxins.

What Dermal Dimensions clients are saying:

AGING: Thanks to Ruth Ann's skill with microdermabrasion, and acid treatments, I can now keep the wrinkles of experience off my face and in my heart, where they belong. The lines are softer, and my face feels ten years younger!" - Shelly Yeaman

HYPERPIGMENTATION:  "I have been getting the microdermabrasion peels with combined therapy ( From Dermal Dimensions) and have noticed a huge difference in the hyper-pigmentation on my face. I feel like I am getting more for my money with these peels, and more lasting results." - S.S.

SCARRING:  "I had surgery to improve acne scars. I did not see as dramatic of results with this surgery as I did with my last treatment from Ruth Ann.  I was surprised to see major improvement in the smoothing out of the surface.  A certain scar, which at one time had deep stitches, has diminished to a point I never thought possible. I am encouraged by the results and impressed by Ruth Ann’s knowledge, and resourcefulness, and compassion. Ruth Ann has given hope to many, of which I am one." -  Tracey Smith

Professional Clinical Microdermabrasion

How does the treatment work? Microdermabrasion works in several ways:

  1. Correction: The speed, direction, and depth of the crystal flow gently resurface layers of the skin, allowing smoother, fresher skin to emerge.
  2. Stimulation: The vacuum action stimulates micro-circulation increasing the blood supply, providing nutrients for skin regeneration. A relay of chemical messages from cell layer to cell layer modulates mediators such as growth factor and cytokines inducing a reparative response, formation of new collagen and elastin to improve skin texture and elasticity.
  3. Detoxification: When performed properly, the vacuum action increases the lymphatic flow which then carries away waste trapped within the tissues, speeding healing, and improving facial contour.
  4. Skin Clarity and Brightness: hyperpigmentation, and skin brightness improves
  5. Pore Appearance: is improved
  6. Skin Clarity, and Texture: vibrant, healthy skin is revealed
  7. Fine Lines: are diminished, collagen is increased, and skin looks younger

 COMMON QUESTIONS

Is it painful? At the most, very sensitive skins experience a sensation of intense tingling. After treatment, the skin has a pink glow. You can resume your normal activities almost immediately. The lunch hour peel.

Is it safe? Microdermabrasion offers a gentler alternative. It does not involve trauma or bleeding. At Dermal Dimensions great care is taken to make sure client safety is top priority. The treatment is executed slowly and progressively, removing only superficial layers of the epidermis to reveal a youthful complexion and glow.

How long does it take? A treatment can take as little as 30 minutes. When combined with facial massage and other treatments, including extraction, it takes 45 minutes to an hour.

How many treatments will I need? Age and skin condition determines the number of treatments  for optimum effect. Usually a minimum of six treatments is recommended. Results can be felt in one session. For long term results, it is recommend maintaining your investment with monthly treatments after your initial series is complete.
